Picture this. It’s your first time working a big gig outside of your normal setting. I’m talking going from playing guitar in a coffee shop to Taylor Swift on her first tour. Well, probably not that extreme. But that’s what I imagined! You have so much responsibility and are the leader of the department. Stress is building as each minute goes by, and you try to sit down to focus on your work. Then, the door bursts open and some random (but extremely handsome) guy comes walking in to your workspace and just starts moving things around! What are the first words that come out of your mouth? I’m 99.99999% sure it isn’t what I first said to Jack. No normal human would start their love story this way. But our story is different. “Who the **** are you and what are you doing in my booth?!?!”
I’m going to be honest with you. Our story was completely unexpected. At the time that Jack and I met in April of 2015, I had just gotten out of a 2 year relationship of sorts (it’s complicated). My depression was at an all time high, and I was just trying to push through my last semester of my Junior year of college. I was attending the University of Central Florida and was in the Theatre program. I was studying to be a theatre lighting designer and electrician. Being completely unaware of anything going on around me, apparently Jack had started in the program in January of that year. He came back to school to study sound design for theatre.
Anyway, back to the awkward first encounter of our story. The annual dance concert was taking place at the new Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center and I was chosen by UCF to be the lighting supervisor and design multiple dance pieces. I was at the top of my game, and this character just interrupted my workflow. My patience was non-existent. I said what I said, and Jack didn’t skip a beat. “I’m Jack, I’m assisting with setting up sound for the dance concert, and this is not YOUR booth. I look forward to working with you.” Dang. He’s attractive and sassy? I love it. He gave me that stupid, goofy smile, and went on with his work.
I have to say, I was a mischievous and conniving girl back in college. Wanting to get to know him after that interaction, I came up with a plan in a matter of minutes. Who knew if it would work, but I sure was going to try. Starting with him changing colors for the lights and adding templates, to focusing my equipment, I strived to spend as much time as possible with him. Jack even videoed my dance pieces so I could watch them and correct any notes. We became Facebook friends so I could get the videos from his phone, and we started talking there every other day.
Finally, I asked him if he wanted to come see the final product with us at the actual show. I figured he’d say no since he had been staying later than needed every night and watched every rehearsal with me. But, he said yes! AHHHH. I wasn’t expecting it and had NO idea what this meant!
You’ll have to wait and see what happens on the next blog! Every other Sunday for the next few months, we will be releasing bits and pieces of our story so you can get to know us! We’d also love to get to know your story, so send us an inquiry for your wedding or engagement session!
As you wait patiently for the next installment of our story, check out some of our more recent fun!
